Sorting Explained
Clear, practical answers about what AI sorting can contribute—and what still needs human judgement and process checks.
What does computer vision do on a sorting line?
It analyses images to locate visible objects or regions and estimate which defined category they may fit. It provides a model output, not a full material inspection.
Can AI identify every material in a mixed load?
No. Items may be covered, dirty, damaged, unusually shaped or outside the examples used to develop the system. An incomplete view should be treated as uncertain.
Does a recognised label mean the material is recovered?
No. A label has to lead to an appropriate action, the equipment has to act on the intended object, and the resulting stream still needs checking.
Can a camera verify what is inside an object?
Not from an ordinary surface image alone. It can describe visible evidence; hidden composition and some material properties may need other forms of inspection or testing.
Why can materials be misclassified?
Occlusion, contamination, reflections, shadow, motion blur, unusual inputs and variability in material appearance can all complicate classification.
What happens when the system is unsure?
The response should be defined for the site. It could be a no-action outcome, a separate route, another pass or human review. The chosen process needs to be safe and workable.
Which automated separation method is best?
There is no universal best method. Equipment needs depend on the target material, feed, line design, operational limits, safety arrangements and maintenance capacity.
How should a team check output quality?
Start by defining what matters for the material's next destination. Then select appropriate visual checks, sampling, records or other assessments, and document the method and findings.
Can sorting technology guarantee a recovery rate?
No general guarantee applies to every site or material mix. Any performance claim needs a defined measurement approach, relevant operating conditions and supporting evidence.
What should a project manager ask a supplier?
Ask which material classes and operating conditions are supported, how uncertain cases are handled, what the system measures, how it is maintained, how output is verified and what evidence supports any performance claims.
